Film making was never in Priyadarshan's wishlist. He absolutely loved cricket and wanted to make a career of it. But an injury to his left eye ended all his hopes and Priyadarshan started looking for another profession. Mohanlal, the megastar of the Malayalam industry advised and urged Priyadarshan to try his luck in films. Priyadarshan took Mohanlal's advice and forayed into movies by debuting with the superhit film 'Poochakkoru Mookkuthi'. Since then, Priyadarshan has directed numerous blockbuster Malayalam movies and even won the Kerala State Award for Best Director. His career in Bollywood began with 'Muskurahat' - which unfortunately tanked at the box office. However, Priyadarshan soon delivered his first successful Hindi film in form of 'Gardish'. The success was followed with super hit 'Viraasat' starring Anil Kapoor. Most of Priyadarshan's Hindi movies were remakes of old Malayalam films written and directed by other artistes. But that didn't matter to Priyadarshan who soon became one of the most sought after directors of Bollywood with box office success like 'Hera Pheri', 'Hulchul', 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' and 'Hungama'.
