Bappi Lahiri

Rating:

Born: November 1952

Bappi Lahiri was born in Calcutta in a family where music ran in the blood. Bappi's father, Aparesh Lahiri was a renowned Bengali singer and a music maestro. Some of Bappi's relatives include music giants such as Kishore Kumar and S. Mukherjee. No surprise then that Bappi learned to play tablas at the tender age of three. At the age of 19, Bappi decided to move towards Bollywood. He started with Tahir Hussain's 'Zakhmee', which proved to be just the right launch pad for him. He not only composed soulful music for it but also doubled up as a playback singer. The tracks instantly struck a chord with the audience and became instant hits. But it was the songs from his next movie 'Chalte Chalte' that earned him a name in the industry and popularity with the masses. His music in 'Surakshaa' took his career to even greater heights. From there, he went on to give evergreen melodies such as 'Gori Hai Kalaaiyaan...' and 'Jimmy Jimmy...' His excellence kept multiplying with musical scores in movies like 'Waardat', 'Commando', 'Disco Dancer', 'Dance Dance', 'Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki', 'Namak Halal', 'Sharabi' and 'Himatwalla'. Bappi would vouch most of his songs to be voiced by the two great voices of Bollywood - Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. After a brief disappearance, Bappi returned with a bang with the music of Prakash Mehra's 'Dalaal' starring Mithun Chakraborty. The song 'Gutur Gutur' from the film was a big hit and became a craze among the masses. Bappi Lahiri has also been invited by leading channels to adjudge their reality shows such as 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' and 'K For Kishore'.
